Gas Leak Detection & Location

Reticulated natural gas and LPG installations leak silently and dangerously. HydroTrace locates gas leaks in residential, commercial and industrial gas networks using calibrated detection equipment.

Warning Signs

If You Suspect A Gas Leak

Gas leaks are a serious safety hazard. If you smell gas, evacuate the area, ventilate (open doors and windows), do not switch electrical equipment on or off, and call us or your emergency gas supplier immediately.

  • Smell of rotten egg, sulphur or distinctive odorant near gas appliances or pipework
  • Hissing or whistling sounds near gas lines, fittings or appliances
  • Discoloration or dying vegetation in a line above a buried gas pipe
  • Unusually high gas bills without changed usage
  • Pilot lights repeatedly going out
  • Yellow or orange flames on appliances (should be steady blue)
  • Physical symptoms — headaches, dizziness, nausea — that improve when you leave the building
Detection Method

How Gas Leaks Are Located

  1. Pressure decay test. The gas system is isolated and pressurised with an inert test medium. The decay rate confirms whether a leak exists and how significant it is.
  2. Line isolation. Individual circuits are isolated and tested separately to narrow the leak to a specific run of pipe.
  3. Combustible gas detection. Calibrated sensors are used to sweep along the suspect line. The sensor responds to gas concentrations far below the level a human nose can detect.
  4. Bubble testing on fittings. Soap solution applied to joints and fittings confirms small leaks at connections.
  5. For buried lines: Tracer gas methods or surface gas detection are used to locate leaks under driveways, slabs and gardens without excavation.
Where We Detect Gas Leaks

Residential, Commercial & Industrial

Residential Gas Installations

LPG cylinder installations, reticulated natural gas, gas geysers, gas hobs and ovens, gas heating systems.

Commercial Kitchens & Restaurants

Bulk LPG installations, gas line manifolds, equipment connections to ranges, woks, salamanders and ovens.

Industrial Gas Networks

Process gas lines, fuel-gas distribution, boilers and burners, manufacturing equipment supply.

Body Corporates & Estates

Shared reticulated gas networks serving multiple units, common-area gas geysers and centralised hot-water systems.

Certification

Certificate of Conformity & SAQCC Gas Compliance

South African gas installations must be inspected and certified by a SAQCC Gas registered installer. The Certificate of Conformity is required for property transfers, insurance policies covering gas installations, new gas installations and modifications, and regular re-certification of commercial gas systems.

HydroTrace works with SAQCC Gas registered technicians to issue compliance certificates following leak detection and any required remedial work.
