Insurance Claims Assistance & Reporting

HydroTrace provides insurer-ready leak detection investigations and technical reporting services for homeowners, commercial properties, industrial facilities, body corporates and property managers throughout Gauteng and South Africa.

The Problem

Hidden Leaks Often Go Unseen

Many hidden leaks remain undetected for extended periods because they develop beneath slabs, paving, underground infrastructure and concealed plumbing systems. These hidden leaks often result in excessive municipal water bills, structural moisture damage, underground erosion and property deterioration.

By the time a hidden leak surfaces visibly, significant damage may already have occurred. The role of a professional leak detection investigation is to locate the source as accurately as possible before exploratory demolition begins — and to document the findings in a format your insurer can act on.

Insurer Compatibility

We Work With All Major South African Insurers

HydroTrace assists clients insured through every major South African insurance provider by producing professional leak detection investigations and structured technical reports formatted to the standards insurance assessors expect. We do not claim formal insurer partnerships — but our reports are accepted by every major insurer's claims process.

Insurance-Ready Reports

Structured documentation formatted for direct submission to any South African insurer's claims process.

Technical Findings

Photographs, methodology, location data and repair recommendations every assessor expects.

Non-Invasive Diagnostics

Acoustic, thermal, pressure-test and CCTV evidence that supports claim approval without unnecessary demolition.

24–48h Turnaround

Reports delivered within 24–48 hours of investigation — keeping your claim moving.

Final claim approval remains subject to your insurer's policy terms and conditions — but the HydroTrace report format is the standard South African insurer documentation that every major insurer accepts.

Detection Methods

Advanced Non-Invasive Diagnostics

Where possible, HydroTrace investigations use non-invasive technology to minimise unnecessary damage to flooring, walls, paving and underground infrastructure during the investigation phase.

  • Acoustic leak detection — listens for the sound a pressurised leak makes through pipe walls and surrounding material
  • Thermal imaging — finds temperature differences caused by hot-water leaks and water migration beneath slabs
  • Moisture analysis — measures surface and subsurface moisture levels to map the extent of water ingress
  • Pressure testing — isolates which pipe circuit is leaking and how significant the leak is
  • Underground pipe tracing — locates concealed services before any excavation is required
The Report

What's In An Insurer-Ready Report

HydroTrace reports are structured to support insurer assessment processes by clearly documenting findings, supporting evidence and recommendations.

  • Leak origin findings — what was found, where, and the likely failure mechanism
  • Moisture observations — surface and subsurface moisture distribution and extent
  • Pressure testing notes — recorded test results that establish the leak exists
  • Thermal images where applicable — for hot-water and slab leaks
  • Photographic evidence — on-site photographs of the leak point and any damage
  • Infrastructure observations — pipe material, age, condition and accessibility
  • Repair recommendations — recommended scope and approach, with severity prioritisation
Claim Process

From Suspicion to Settlement

A typical hidden-leak insurance claim follows this sequence. HydroTrace handles steps 2-4; your insurer handles 1, 5 and 6.

  1. You report the issue to your insurer. A claim number is opened. The insurer will usually ask for a leak detection report before authorising further investigation or repair.
  2. HydroTrace attends site. We perform the diagnostics needed to confirm and locate the leak. Most residential investigations take 2-4 hours.
  3. Report issued within 24-48 hours. A written report with diagnostic data, marked site plan, and recommended repair scope.
  4. Report submitted to insurer. Either you forward it, or with your written permission we can send it directly to the assessor.
  5. Insurer authorises repair. The assessor reviews the report. If approved, the insurer authorises repair work.
  6. Repair completed and certified. Repair work is done by HydroTrace or a PIRB-registered plumbing partner. Compliance certification issued where required.
Common Questions

Insurance Claim FAQ

Does HydroTrace work directly for insurance companies?

HydroTrace assists clients insured through major South African insurers but does not claim formal insurer partnerships unless specifically stated. We're an independent leak detection specialist whose reports are formatted to insurer requirements.

Will my insurance cover the leak detection cost itself?

Often, yes. Most South African policies cover both the detection and the repair of hidden leaks. Check your policy wording. Even if the detection cost isn't directly reimbursed, the report typically unlocks a much larger claim for the damage caused.

How long is the report valid for?

The diagnostic findings are valid as long as the conditions on site don't change. Most insurers expect claims to be lodged within 30 days of the report date.

Can you send the report directly to my insurer?

With your written authorisation, yes. This is common for body corporates and commercial clients. For residential claims, most clients prefer to review the report first and forward it themselves.

What if the insurer disputes the report?

Disputes are rare when the report is supported by diagnostic data. If a dispute does arise, we can provide raw test data, attend an assessor's site visit, or issue clarifications.
