Leak Detection
Non-invasive leak detection using acoustic correlation, pressure decay testing, tracer gas, thermal imaging and electromagnetic pipe tracing.
Nationwide South Africa Coverage
HydroTrace provides this service across South Africa for residential, commercial, industrial, municipal and mining infrastructure clients. We support Gauteng, Western Cape, KwaZulu-Natal, Eastern Cape, Free State, Mpumalanga, Limpopo, North West and Northern Cape projects.
Technical Overview
HydroTrace performs advanced underground leak detection for residential, commercial, municipal, mining and industrial water infrastructure. The objective is to locate the highest-probability leak position before excavation, reducing guesswork, surface damage and repair cost.
Leak detection is a diagnostic process. Our technicians assess hydraulic behaviour, isolate sections, test pressure response, trace pipe alignments and apply the correct detection technology for material, pressure, depth and ground conditions.

Full Technical Process
Hydraulic System Assessment
Technicians review pipe material, diameter, pressure regime, valve positions, isolation zones, service history and visible symptoms. This creates a diagnostic baseline before instruments are deployed.
Line Isolation & Pressure Decay Testing
Suspect pipe sections are isolated and pressure tested. Pressure decay curves indicate whether the section is losing pressure and help estimate leak severity.
Acoustic Correlation
Sensors are placed at access points such as valves, hydrants or exposed pipe sections. Correlators calculate leak location by comparing the time delay between leak-noise signals detected at each sensor.
Ground Microphone Verification
The suspected leak zone is verified using ground microphones. Technicians listen for peak leak intensity directly above the pipe alignment.
Electromagnetic Pipe Tracing
Pipe alignment and depth are confirmed using transmitters and receivers. Accurate tracing prevents unnecessary excavation and avoids damage to adjacent services.
Thermal, Tracer Gas or Secondary Diagnostics
Where acoustic performance is limited by pipe material, depth or low pressure, thermal imaging, tracer gas or additional tests may be used to confirm moisture movement or gas escape points.
Marking, Reporting & Repair Guidance
HydroTrace marks the most probable leak position and provides findings, site notes, defect interpretation and practical repair or rehabilitation recommendations.

Leak Detection Technical FAQs
Can you find leaks without digging?
In many cases, yes. The purpose of leak detection is to narrow the leak location before excavation starts. Final accuracy depends on pipe material, pressure, depth, access and ground conditions.
Why do some leaks not make noise?
Low pressure, plastic pipes, saturated ground and deep installations can reduce acoustic transmission. Additional methods such as pressure testing, tracer gas or thermal diagnostics may be required.
Do you detect pool leaks?
Yes. Pool leak detection includes shell checks, plumbing pressure tests, fittings, skimmers, lights, main drains and water features.
